Looking for a quick crochet project that’s cute, functional, and makes an amazing gift? These faux fur scrunchies are exactly that. They work up in about 15-20 minutes, use minimal supplies, and look absolutely adorable—whether you’re wearing them in your hair or styling them on a new pair of sneakers.
I made these fluffy pink scrunchies to match my Nike Air Jordans, and honestly? They’re giving cozy luxury vibes. But you can make them in any color to match your wardrobe, your mood, or your favorite kicks.

Why You’ll Love This Pattern
This is one of those satisfying projects where you start and finish in the same sitting. No complicated stitches, no counting rows forever, no frogging because you lost your place. Just simple half stitches around a hair tie until it’s covered in fluffy goodness.
The faux fur yarn does all the heavy lifting here—it hides any imperfections and makes your finished scrunchie look store-bought (but better, because you made it).
Perfect for:
- Last-minute gifts
- Craft fair inventory
- Using up yarn scraps
- Beginners who want a quick win
Supplies You’ll Need
Here’s what I used to create these cute scrunchies:
Yarn:
- Lion Brand Go for Faux Thick & Quick Yarn in Pink Poodle – This yarn is super soft and fluffy. One skein makes several scrunchies.
Tools:
- Vodiye 37 PCS Crochet Hooks Set – I used the L/8.00mm hook from this set. The ergonomic handles are great if you’re making multiple scrunchies.
- Ouchless elastic hair ties (the plain black ones work best)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Hook Size: L/8.00mm (8.0mm)

The Pattern
This pattern uses a simple technique of working single crochet stitches directly around the elastic hair tie. No chain to start—you’re crocheting right onto the elastic.
Step 1: Attach the Yarn
Tie your yarn to the elastic hair tie with a simple knot. Leave a 3-4 inch tail to weave in later.
Step 2: Twist the Yarn Tail
Twist the yarn tail around the hair tie a few times to secure it. This keeps your starting point from getting loose while you work.
Step 3: Start Your Single Crochets
Insert your crochet hook through the hair tie, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over again, and pull through both loops on your hook. That’s your single crochet.
Keep making single crochets around the entire hair tie. Push your stitches together as you go so they’re snug and there are no gaps.
Step 4: Cover the Entire Hair Tie
Continue working single crochets until you’ve gone all the way around and the elastic is completely covered with fluffy yarn. The faux fur texture will puff up and hide the hair tie underneath.
Step 5: Join and Finish
Once the hair tie is completely covered, slip stitch through your first single crochet to join the round.
Cut your yarn, leaving a 4-5 inch tail. Pull the tail through the last loop to fasten off.
Step 6: Weave in Ends
Use your yarn needle to weave in both the starting tail and the ending tail. With faux fur yarn, you can just weave them through a few stitches and trim—the fluff hides everything.
Tips for Working with Faux Fur Yarn
Faux fur yarn can be tricky if you’ve never used it before. Here are some things I’ve learned:
It’s hard to see your stitches. Don’t stress about it. Feel for the hair tie underneath and make sure you’re stitching around it, not into your previous stitches. The furry texture is very forgiving.
Use a bigger hook than you think. The L/8.00mm hook works great with this thick yarn. If you go smaller, you’ll fight the yarn and your hands will get tired.
Push stitches together as you go. You want the scrunchie to be full and fluffy, so don’t leave gaps between your single crochets.
The yarn tangles easily. Pull from the center of the skein if possible, and don’t unwind too much at once.
Styling Ideas
I styled my pink scrunchies with a pair of pink Nike Air Jordans for a coordinated look—how cute is that? But here are some other ideas:
- Make a set in school colors for a teen gift
- Create holiday-themed scrunchies (red and green, pastels for Easter, orange for fall)
- Match your favorite outfit or handbag
- Make mini versions as cat toys (just don’t add the hair tie!)
How Many Can You Make from One Skein?
One skein of Lion Brand Go for Faux Thick & Quick makes approximately 4-6 scrunchies, depending on how tightly you stitch and how full you want them. This makes it a super affordable project—especially great if you’re making them for craft fairs or gifts.
